How Much Does an AI Chatbot Cost in 2026? The Build, the Bill and the Part Nobody Quotes
Most price guides answer with a range so wide it is useless. The honest answer depends on three choices you can make before you talk to anyone: buy or build, which model, and who keeps the answers correct.

Ask ten agencies what an AI chatbot costs and you will get answers from $20 a month to $300,000. They are all telling the truth, because they are pricing different things. Before comparing quotes, it helps to split the cost into the three parts every chatbot has.
The three costs
- Building it. Setting it up, connecting it to your content and systems, and testing it. A one-off cost, or zero if you buy a ready-made tool.
- Running it. The AI model's usage bill, plus hosting and any subscription. A monthly cost that grows with the number of messages.
- Keeping it right. Updating its knowledge when prices, policies or services change, and checking what it tells customers. The cost almost no quote includes.
Buy or build: what the market charges
Published 2026 price guides, all written by companies that sell chatbots, land in roughly these bands:
| Option | Typical quoted price | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-made chatbot tool (subscription) | About $20 to $100 a month for small plans; more with seats and add-ons | You need answers from a website and a few documents, and nothing else |
| Simple scripted bot, custom-built | About $3,000 to $15,000 | Questions are predictable and answers rarely change |
| AI assistant on your own documents and systems | Low-to-mid five figures and up | It must read your data, follow your rules, or hand off to staff |
One guide warns that a plan advertised at $29 a month can reach $300 once AI features, extra seats and overage charges are added. Read the limits on messages and seats, not only the headline price.
Running it: the model bill is smaller than you think
Take a small business whose website chatbot handles 3,000 conversations a month, four messages each: 12,000 requests. Each request sends about 5,000 tokens (instructions, the help articles it looked up, and the conversation so far) and gets back a 300-token answer.
| Model | Input (60M tokens) | Output (3.6M tokens) | Monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku 5.5 (small) | $6.00 | $1.80 | $7.80 |
| GPT-6 Luna (small) | $6.00 | $1.80 | $7.80 |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite (small) | $18.00 | $9.00 | $27.00 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 (mid-range) | $120.00 | $36.00 | $156.00 |
Even the mid-range model costs less than a day of a support person's time each month. Hosting the search index and the app usually adds a modest monthly amount on top. You can put your own numbers into our free AI cost calculator, which uses the same price list.
Keeping it right: the cost nobody quotes
A chatbot that gives a wrong price, promises a refund you don't offer or invents a policy costs more than any model bill. The work that prevents that is ongoing:
- Updating its sources when your prices, opening hours or services change. If nobody owns this, the bot goes stale within months.
- Reading a sample of real conversations every week, especially the ones where customers asked for a human.
- Clear limits: topics it must refuse, and a fast handover to a person for complaints, payments and anything legal.
- Testing after changes. A fixed set of 30 to 50 real questions, re-run whenever you change the model or the instructions.
Most wrong answers come from the system finding the wrong page, not from the model inventing things. We wrote about that in why most RAG errors are retrieval errors.
Five questions to ask before you pay anyone
- How many messages a month is the price based on, and what happens above that?
- Which AI model does it use, and can we change it later? Prices fell sharply this year; you want to be able to move.
- Where do its answers come from? It should cite your pages, not general knowledge.
- What does it do when it doesn't know? The right answer is "says so and hands over", not "makes a best guess".
- Who updates it when our information changes, and what does that cost?
If you want a second opinion on a quote or a monthly bill, send us the details. We will tell you what the model part should cost.
