What First Edition Design Publishing does
First Edition Design Publishing is a publisher that formats, converts and submits books to eBook and print-on-demand distribution channels. Its packages cover e-book, print and audio formats, along with marketing items such as a professionally written press release. Print-on-demand submissions include an ISBN, LCCN, bar code and interior layout, and translations are offered in seven languages. A Bookseller Return Program lets paperback titles published under its imprint be returned to brick-and-mortar booksellers, and its Truly Indie services suit self-published authors who want limited help. Cover art is created uniquely for each title.

Working with a publisher or book printer
Read the contract carefully: rights, royalties and who pays for what. Be cautious of publishers asking for large upfront fees.
What to check
- Who owns the rights and for how long
- Royalty rates and payment schedule
- Any fees you pay and what they cover
- Print quality samples
Questions to ask
- Who pays for editing, design and printing?
- How will the book be distributed and marketed?
- How do I get my rights back?
